While this is a good article to get you started on creating Dragon pages, you can always dive into creating articles without reading this one, simply by picking an appropriate [[Table of Dragons|Dragon]] similar to the one you want to create and then adapt said Dragon. This article mostly deals with the theory of article creation, thus experimenting with already-existing Dragons is a more practical learning method. '''This article was created to unify editing of Dragon articles on this wiki.''' It aims to provide a thorough understanding of article creation and explain the process in a way that all users, even those who have no knowledge of the wiki software or of wiki editing in general, are able to create Dragon pages on their own. If anything in this article is unclear or insufficiently explained, then turn to one of the active {{dmlw|staff}} members to help you further.

The very first step when creating an article [[Dragon Mania Legends Wiki:Wiki Quick Reference Guide#Creating a New Page|is to learn how to create a page]]. Once you have done that, the article needs to be given an appropriate name. This name will always be the full, official name that can be found in the game itself.
The first step is to create a new page. '''Note:''' Regular Dragons include "Dragon" in their name, such as "Fire Dragon", while {{ctg|Boss Dragons}} and {{ctg|Clan Dragons}} do not.

{{#lsth:{{NAMESPACE}}:Manual of Style|Creating Articles}}
In a nutshell: regular Dragons include "Dragon" in their name, while {{ctg|Boss Dragons}} and {{ctg|Clan Dragons}} do not include that word. After an appropriate name is chosen, the next step is adding the contents.
==Unknown or Partial Information==

Dragons are not added until at least some of their information is obtained. If a dragon needs to be with partial information, put the <code><nowiki>{{Uncertain}}</nowiki></code> template at the top of the Dragon's page. Using the {{template|Uncertain}} template produces the following:

Absolutely all events make use of an {{wp|infobox}} template called the {{template|DragonBox}}, a content-generating tool to simplify page creation. As the documentation of said template is already written, we will dwell on the following steps.
All Dragon pages use an {{wp|infobox}} template called {{template|DragonBox}}, a content-generating tool that simplifies page creation. This template creates an information box at the right of Dragon pages. The easiest fill out the template, is to find another Dragon whose method of obtaining is the same, then copy/paste its contents into a new page, adapting it as needed.

Note: If only partial information is available about a Dragon, (as is sometimes the case with Legendary, Divine, and Ancient Dragons) put the {{template|UnknownStats}} template at the top of the its page. Using the template mentioned produced the following:
{{ctg|Templates}} are indicated by their opening <code><nowiki>{{</nowiki></code> and closing <code><nowiki>}}</nowiki></code> curly brackets, as well as the parameters <code><nowiki>|parametername=</nowiki></code> and values (text after the equals sign) they contain. The values help generate the Dragon's page content. Documentation on all available {{template|DragonBox}} parameters can be found on its [[Template:DragonBox/doc|Documentation page]].

==Description==
==Description==
This is the area for the description of the Dragon. The description is added to the |description= parameter of the DragonBox. After the automatically-generated opening statement, create a flowing description, beginning at the head and working to the tail or feet like [[Oi'ra Dragon|this dragon]]. Information for the description can be taken from its physical appearance, its [[Dragon Codex#Codex Entries|Codex Entry]], and/or its behavior in its Habitat. DO NOT describe one Dragon by referring to the appearance of another Dragon. Comparisons can be drawn between the Dragon and the concept/being it is based on. These, in turn, should be referenced through the {{template|wp}} template by linking to a Wikipedia article. Since most Dragons could be either gender, the description should be suited to both. DO NOT use gender in the description unless the name of the Dragon designates one.

==Body Shape==
The style represents the body shape of the Dragon. This must be added to the |style= parameter of the DragonBox.

Dragons that have been available as a breeding token should have a Breeding Tokens Combination table on their page instead using the {{template|BreedingTokenCombinations}} template underneath the <code><nowiki>{{DragonBox}}</nowiki></code> template, which will auto-generate the necessary combinations from the Dragon's Elements (e.g., the [[Bonsai Dragon]] page). Since the elements are the same for each event, events names are not referenced, also because they already appear in the Events table automated-list below.

* '''Dragon of the Week''' whose combinations can be easily obtained by going to [https://dml-planner.eu/app/breeding Toomas' Breeding Planner] (external site), selecting the appropriate parents, pressing the '''Breed''' button, then under the '''Results Format''' drop-down, selecting '''Wiki'''.
** Don't forget to change the <code>breeding_timespan</code> text to match the dates are they are done on other DOTW pages (e.g., <code><nowiki>8-15 March 2021</nowiki></code> and also ensure you put the desired outcome Dragon's name in bold.

Make sure to add the appropriate categories at the bottom of the page that is being created by adding <code><nowiki>[[Category:<name of category>]]</nowiki></code>. All categories on this wiki can be found [[Special:Categories|on this list]].
Most categories are automatically added to Dragon pages based on their {{template|DragonBox}} template parameters and values. If a category is missing, ensure the correct parameters and values are input in DragonBox. For the odd instance where a category is missing, add the appropriate categories at the bottom of the page being created (e.g., <code><nowiki>[[Category:Category Name]]</nowiki></code>). So far, '''the DragonBox automatically adds all of the categories depending on the given values'''. As such, currently, there are no categories that need manual adding. However, should the need arise, simply add the necessary category at the very bottom of the article. SUGGESTION

Creating new Dragon pages is easiest by picking an existing Dragon obtained the same way, copying its page contents, then adapting it. Make sure to use the preview function before saving your edits!

An article model is a guide to model pages after, used on pages of a similar type to keep them unified in format and appearance. If anything in this article is unclear, please contact staff for help or post on the Wiki Support page.

Title

The first step is to create a new page. Note: Regular Dragons include "Dragon" in their name, such as "Fire Dragon", while Boss Dragons and Clan Dragons do not.

Before creating a new page, always search the topic thoroughly to ensure it is not already covered. Methods for creating a new page are as follows:

Creating a New Page
Search + "Redlink" (Preferred Method) New Page feature (error-prone)

Preferred method:

  1. Open Special:Search.
  2. Enter and search for the page name, using the appropriate name (the full, official name as found in the game itself), with proper capitalization (what you search for is also used to create the new page, exactly as entered).
    • Example: "Bottomless D<ungeon" has proper capitalization where "Bottomless dungeon" does not, and just "Dungeon" would be incorrect as it is not the correct title as it appears in-game).
  3. Check search results, ensure page or page section doesn't already exist. Your search text creates a red link:
"Create the page New Page Name on this wiki! See search results found"
  1. If no existing page/section exists, click the red link to create the page exactly as entered.
  2. Enter page content and always preview for errors and make corrections before saving.
  3. Save the page.

New Page feature (error-prone)

  1. Click New Page in the sidebar Utilities section.
  2. Choose the correct page type.
  3. In the input field, enter the full, official name found in the game itself (with proper capitalization) and press the Add new button.
    • Example: "Bottomless Dungeon" has proper capitalization where "Bottomless dungeon" does not, and just "Dungeon" would be incorrect as it is not the correct title as it appears in-game).
  4. Enter the content you want on the page, then always preview for errors and make necessary corrections before saving.
  5. Click the Save page button.

Unknown or Partial Information

Dragons are not added until at least some of their information is obtained. If a dragon needs to be with partial information, put the {{Uncertain}} template at the top of the Dragon's page. Using the {{Uncertain}} template produces the following:

Sticker - Shrug.png
The following Dragon information is preliminary, and may be incorrect. Any information present here or elsewhere is subject to change without notice.

Information Box

All Dragon pages use an infobox template called {{DragonBox}}, a content-generating tool that simplifies page creation. This template creates an information box at the right of Dragon pages. The easiest fill out the template, is to find another Dragon whose method of obtaining is the same, then copy/paste its contents into a new page, adapting it as needed.

Templates are indicated by their opening {{ and closing }} curly brackets, as well as the parameters |parametername= and values (text after the equals sign) they contain. The values help generate the Dragon's page content. Documentation on all available {{DragonBox}} parameters can be found on its Documentation page.

Please carefully compare the data you enter with that of the game, to ensure a 100% match.

Update Introduced Caveat

Each update, all Dragons added to the game data are added to the total Dragon Codex count, but are sometimes not made available for obtainment (or appearing) until a future update — Apolloed Dragons are an example of such. The total Codex count must be reconcilable with the number of Dragons introduced in the current update, and those previous; thus, the (Game) Update number on a Dragon's page is its game data introduction rather than its first availability or appearance to players.

Description

The description |description= parameter, is the area for a visual description of the Dragon (optional). Create a flowing description, beginning at the head and working to the tail or feet, like that of Oi'ra Dragon. Information for the description is taken from its physical appearance, its Codex Entry, and/or its behavior in its Habitat. DO not describe one Dragon by referring to the appearance of another. Comparisons can be drawn between the Dragon and the concept it is based on. Links to concept examples from Wikipedia, should be done using the {{wp}} template. Since most Dragons could be either gender, the description should be suited to both. DO not use gender in the description unless the name of the Dragon designates one.

Body Shape

The |style= parameter should specify the Body Shapes of the Dragon.

Dragons in the game have different body shapes, which are divided into classifications. These classifications determine a Dragon's overall appearance and movement. Body shapes have no bearing on any other aspect of a Dragon beyond aesthetics.

All Body Shapes
Example Images Distinguishing Features Number of Dragons
Body Type - Anserine.png These Dragons have a goose or chicken-like body that is low to the ground, often having wings that emerge from the front limbs rather than the sides or back of the body, though they can also be wingless. They are quadrupeds with long necks, a front shoulder area typically lower than the rear, long tails, and typically an s-shaped transition from the head and neck to the body. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is Chicken. 86
Anserine
Body Type - Brawny.png These Dragons have a thick, brawny neck, upper chest, and front legs, where the hind legs are typically thinner and shorter. These Dragons are similar to their Leonine counterparts, except less balanced in size and broadness from front-to-back. They may or may not have wings. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is gorilla/simian. 11
Brawny
Body Type - Cobby.png These Dragons have a short, barrel-shaped (longer than usual) body, that is stocky, and has short legs. They may have 4 or more legs (always in pairs) and may or may not have wings. Some may have small upper "arms" and some may not. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is caterpillar/trampler. 23
Cobby
Body Type - Finned.png These Dragons have an elongated body that tapers to the tail. They have fins rather than arms and legs, and can usually travel on land as well as in the water. The top half of the body is vertical and the bottom half is parallel to the ground. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is seal. 127
Finned
Body Type - Leonine.png These Dragons are lion-like, quadrupedal predators that have a broad thorax with a smaller hip section, allowing them to crouch and pounce quickly. They may also have a long or short neck. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is lion. 184
Leonine
Body Type - Reptilian.png These Dragons have elongated bodies that run parallel to the ground. The body tapers gradually to the tail, they have fins, and unlike Finned-Style Dragons, their whole body is generally parallel to the ground (except the head and neck). The internal game descriptor for this body shape is fish. 36
Reptilian
Body Type - Saurian.png These quadrupedal Dragons typically have a shorter body and thicker, tube-like legs. They also walk on four legs like a dog and tend to be very playful. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is doggy or toy. 107
Saurian
Body Type - Seahorse.png These Dragons have a delicate, seahorse-like body that curves but doesn't coil. They often have wings, and a tail that curls forward. Some of these dragons have feet, and those who do have short, vertical legs that are parallel to each other. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is seahorse/faerie. 10
Seahorse
Body Type - Serpentine.png These Dragons are snake-like with a thin, elongated body that coils up from the midsection to the tap of the tail, tapering towards the tail. Few have feet but those that do have very small feet. Some also have arms that often start from below the neck. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is snake. 69
Serpentine
Body Type - Stout.png These Dragons have plump or semi-round, and bulky body. They are quadrupeds that have short limbs and are generally slow-moving creatures. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is turtle. 138
Stout
Body Type - Upright.png These Dragons walk upright on two legs like humans, with their bodies vertical from the ground, while the tail typically remains parallel to it. They have short, narrow front feet positioned like arms, and small shoulders. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is biped. 132
Upright
Body Type - Ursine.png These Dragons walk upright on two legs but are more broad (like a bear) than Upright-Style Dragons. They have thicker arms and shoulders, a short, stubby tail, bat-like wings (if they have them), and often thick horns or spikes. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is bear. 84
Ursine
Body Type - Winged.png These Dragons have a long body that tapers down to the tip of the tail, and are always capable of flight. Their legs and feet typically hang, and their tails often curve upward somewhat. They always have back feet, but don't always have front feet. Their front legs resemble arms and are generally a bit shorter than the back legs. The internal game descriptor for this body shape is flyer or pixel. 116
Winged
Clan Dragons
Body Type - Bicipital.png These Dragons are always quadrupedal, always have two heads, and are typically only Clan Dragons. 9

Obtaining

Much of the Obtaining section is automatically or semi-automatically generated by the DragonBox template.

  • The Limited Breeding section is generated for Dragons that have the |token=1 parameter with a number of 1 or above. It is used when Dragon's have a Breeding Token icon in the top left of the Dragon card in the Dragon Codex (and the Dragon Codex tab inside that). Otherwise, this section may need to be added manually, being careful to keep the current format and changing the elements or parents accordingly. See the Breeding Tokens section for more information.
  • Cost of Dragons can either be obtained in the Store, or by visiting a player's islands who has the dragon, tapping on it to view its profile, and then viewing the cost. Note: For Limited-Time Dragons, cost may only be available when the Dragon is available for purchase.

Breeding Tokens

Dragons that have been available as a breeding token should have a Breeding Tokens Combination table on their page instead using the {{BreedingTokenCombinations}} template underneath the {{DragonBox}} template, which will auto-generate the necessary combinations from the Dragon's Elements (e.g., the Bonsai Dragon page).

Events

The Events table is generated, and will autopopulate, by placing the following on its page:

{{DragonEventsTable}}

Note: If the Events heading does not appear automatically as generated by {{DragonBox}}, manually place a heading above its {{DragonEventsTable}}:

==={{ctg|Events}}===

Campaign Map Encounters

This section is added only if the Dragon is encountered in any Main Quest in any of the two modes of the Campaign Map and in a Side Quest and/or mine that is fought for the very first time.

Map Quest Level
Normal <number> <number>
Heroic <number> <number>

Categories

Most categories are automatically added to Dragon pages based on their {{DragonBox}} template parameters and values. If a category is missing, ensure the correct parameters and values are input in DragonBox. For the odd instance where a category is missing, add the appropriate categories at the bottom of the page being created (e.g., [[Category:Category Name]]). All categories on this wiki can be found in Special:Categories. If there are two or more categories, then they have to be inserted on a different line in the following order:

[[Category:Category1]]
[[Category:Category2]]
[[Category:Category3]]
