SUGGESTION

While this is a good article to get you started on creating Dragon pages, you can always dive into creating articles without reading this one, simply by picking an appropriate Dragon similar to the one you want to create and then adapt said Dragon. This article mostly deals with the theory of article creation, thus experimenting with already-existing Dragons is a more practical learning method. Make sure to use the preview function before saving your edits!

This article was created to unify editing of Dragon articles on this wiki. It aims to provide a thorough understanding of article creation and explain the process in a way that all users, even those who have no knowledge of the wiki software or of wiki editing in general, are able to create Dragon pages on their own. If anything in this article is unclear or insufficiently explained, then turn to one of the active staff members to help you further.

Always make sure to carefully compare the data of the Dragon from your game to the article you are creating, to ensure a 100% match.

Title

The very first step when creating an article is to learn how to create a page. Once you have done that, the article needs to be given an appropriate name. This name will always be the full, official name that can be found in the game itself.

In a nutshell: regular Dragons include "Dragon" in their name, while Boss Dragons and Clan Dragons do not include that word. After an appropriate name is chosen, the next step is adding the contents.

Unknown Information

Often Dragons are not added until their information is obtained. If a dragon needs to be added without any information yet (its Information Box/DragonBox cannot be filled out yet, use the Uncertain template at the top of the Dragon's page. Using the template mentioned produces the following:

Sticker - Shrug.png
The following Dragon information is preliminary, and may be incorrect. Any information present here or elsewhere is subject to change without notice.

Information Box

Absolutely all events make use of an infobox template called the DragonBox, a content-generating tool to simplify page creation. As the documentation of said template is already written, we will dwell on the following steps.

Note: If only partial information is available about a Dragon, (as is sometimes the case with Legendary, Divine, and Ancient Dragons) put the UnknownStats template at the top of the its page. Using the template mentioned produced the following:

Template:UnknownStats

Description

This is the area for the description of the Dragon. The description is added to the |description= parameter of the DragonBox. After the automatically-generated opening statement, create a flowing description, beginning at the head and working to the tail or feet like this dragon. Information for the description can be taken from its physical appearance, its Codex Entry, and/or its behavior in its Habitat. DO NOT describe one Dragon by referring to the appearance of another Dragon. Comparisons can be drawn between the Dragon and the concept/being it is based on. These, in turn, should be referenced through the wp template by linking to a Wikipedia article. Since most Dragons could be either gender, the description should be suited to both. DO NOT use gender in the description unless the name of the Dragon designates one.

Body Style

The style represents the body shape of the Dragon. This must be added to the |style= parameter of the DragonBox.

Style DML Types Dragon Examples
Anserine Chicken Light, Stardust, Fireball, Crystal
Finned Seal Boiling, Agent, Archangel, Narwhale

Obtaining

Much of the Obtaining section is automatically or semi-automatically generated by the DragonBox template.

  • The Limited Breeding section is generated for Dragons that have the |token=1 parameter with a number of 1 or above. It is used when Dragon's have a Breeding Token icon in the top left of the Dragon card in the Dragon Codex (and the Dragon Codex tab inside that). Otherwise this section may need to be added manually, being careful to keep the current format and changing the elements or parents accordingly. A table of limited time breeding token events should follow that. See the Breeding Tokens section for more information.
  • Cost of Dragons can either be obtained in the Store, or by visiting a player's islands who has the dragon, tapping on it to view its profile, and then viewing the cost. Note: For Limited-Time Dragons, cost may only be available when the Dragon is available for purchase.

Breeding Tokens

  • Breeding Token events do not go in the Events table. Dragons that have been available as a breeding token should have a Breeding Tokens Combination table on their page instead using the BreedingTokenCombinations template underneath the DragonBox template, which will auto-generate the necessary combinations from the Dragon's Elements (e.g., the Bonsai Dragon page). Since the elements are the same for each event, events names are not referenced, also because they already appear in the Events table automated-list below.

Events

The only tables for breeding outcomes that appear in this section (if applicable) are:

  • Dragon of the Week whose combinations can be easily obtained by going to Toomas' Breeding Planner (external site), selecting the appropriate parents, pressing the Breed button, then under the Results Format drop-down, selecting Wiki.
    • Don't forget to change the breeding_timespan text to match the dates are they are done on other DOTW pages (e.g., 8-15 March 2021 and also ensure you put the desired outcome Dragon's name in bold.
    • If the Breeding Planner done in advance of the event when the desired outcome is not yet set as breedable, will turn out all lines except for the desired Dragon. You can easily add the rows for the desired outcome to the table manually, changing the breeding times to the correct values:
|PAGENAME
|20 hours
|16 hours
|1d 2h 40m
|21h 20m
|-

  • Dragon of the Month combinations using the template (changing the information as required to correct elements and dates).
  • Breeding Event combinations are no longer added to Dragon pages, each Breeding Blitz event page now provides a link to the Breeding Planner (external site) outcomes instead, which are active only when the event is still running).

Campaign Map Encounters

This section is added only if the Dragon is encountered in any Main Quest in any of the two modes of the Campaign Map and in a Side Quest and/or mine that is fought for the very first time.

Map Quest Level
Normal <number> <number>
Heroic <number> <number>

Categories

Make sure to add the appropriate categories at the bottom of the page that is being created by adding . All categories on this wiki can be found on this list.

So far, the DragonBox automatically adds all of the categories depending on the given values. As such, currently, there are no categories that need manual adding. However, should the need arise, simply add the necessary category at the very bottom of the article. If there are two or more categories, then they have to be inserted on a different line in the following order:
